3D Character Artist

WHAT’S THE ROLE? 

As part of our continued growth we have a vacancy for a 3D Character Artist to join our team.  In this role you will be creating both combat & cinematic characters & creatures for our games, receiving guidance, direction and feedback from our 3D Lead & Art Director to ensure all of our characters maintain a high level of quality and consistency.

Your passion for character and creature design will be pivotal to delivering the quality that we strive for in our games.

This role is an on-site role in the Studio in Winnipeg, Canada.  We can offer a relocation package for the right candidate.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Create fantastic in-game character models, using Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop and Substance.
  • Understand the character being created; their narrative, motivations and gameplay potential and weave that into your work.
  • Collaborate with fellow Character Artists, Animators & Tech Artists to maintain the highest quality throughout development; on budget, on time and in the style.
  • Support the integration of your work into our Unity-based game engine.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Proven ability across all aspects of character modelling. Experience with sculpting character & creature anatomy is highly desirable.  
  • A good team player with a willingness to work collaboratively, willingly taking on feedback and guidance from the rest of the team.
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work within an established art style.
  • Exceptional level of high-polygon character modelling in ZBrush or Mudbox (ZBrush preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of 3D packages such as Maya, 3ds Max or Blender (Maya preferred).
  • Excellent Photoshop and Substance Painter texturing skills.
  • Familiarity with the entire real-time character creation pipeline: high-poly sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, texture baking, texture creation, setting up and exporting to game.
  • Awareness of the importance of mesh topology, to ensure that character models deform well when animated.
  • Understanding of best working practices in terms of LOD creation and optimisation.
  • Excellent communications skills.

BONUS IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience with the Unity Game Engine, particularly with content integration.
  • An Art degree or relevant game art course is helpful
  • Flair for interpreting concept art, turning character sketches into 3D models that accurately capture the spirit of the concept.
