Release Engineer

Frontier is the studio behind Jurassic World Evolution, Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster. We are Britain’s biggest independent publisher and developer of videogames, based among the world-leading technology cluster in the historic city of Cambridge, England.

We are proud to be named one of the UK’s Best Places to Work by GamesIndustry.biz.

An opportunity for an exceptional programmer to build a career in game development while contributing to a truly incredible game. We are considering graduate and experienced candidates for this position.

The development of Elite Dangerous is a very complicated process, taking the work of over one hundred people and delivering this to millions of players as incremental updates across multiple platforms. As a Release Engineer you will build a deep understanding of what each developer is contributing and how that fits together to make the game.

As the game team works towards each major public release of the game, there are internal checkpoints where work-in-progress is assessed. You will understand what each developer is contributing for these internal releases, and own the process of getting their work into stable builds for review, throughout this process you will develop an understanding of the Elite Dangerous codebase and our COBRA Engine.  You will continue this work as the game approaches a public release, working with the QA team to prepare builds for internal testing. After a major update of the game is released to players there will be several minor updates to fix bugs and address other issues, where you will focus on getting these changes into stable releases for players.

In addition to bringing work together for internal and public releases, you will have opportunities to investigate bug reports and make improvements to the technology that powers the game. You will work with client-server network architectures and game console development kits. You will use your broad knowledge of the game to improve development pipelines and automation tools. You can make a big contribution to how Elite Dangerous is developed, and ultimately make the game even better for players.

  • Refining the development process to make future releases simpler and faster.
  • Coaching other team members in how to work with the release process.
  • Investigating and improving the technology that the game is built upon.

About you

  • Holds a degree (or equivalent qualification) in a programming-related subject, such as Computer Science.
  • Talented programmer, proficient in C++ and confident in picking up other languages and technologies on the job.
  • Familiar with source control software and version control management.
  • Good problem solving and communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic about fulfilling this key role within a diverse creative team.
